For years, relay communications have been witnessed to extend the network coverage and improve the throughput and reliability of wireless systems. In this paper, we focus on throughput maximization for the two-way buffer-aided relay network with finite data buffers and limited energy battery, wherein relays have no fixed power supply and they replenish energy from the Radio Frequency (RF) signal radiated by source nodes. Specifically, by jointing the time switching and energy splitting for RF energy harvesting, we introduce a three time-subslot transmission model to balance the energy storage and the energy consumption for communication. On top of this transmission model, we formulate an optimization problem for throughput maximization of relay network. We purposely convert the non-convex optimization problem into a convex one by carefully decoupling and relaxing. Further, we theoretically derive the maximum throughput and apply an iterative algorithm to achieve the suboptimal solution based on relay selection and power allocation. In addition to solving the no-delay limited throughput maximization problem, we put forward the solution of the delay limited transmission in the two-way buffer-aided multi-relay networks. Extensive simulations have been conducted to demonstrate that our proposed strategy is able to significantly improve the sum-throughput under transmission energy and delay constraints. In the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications system, various service requirements under different communication environments are expected to be satisfied. As a new evolution network structure, heterogeneous networks (HetNet) have been fully studied in recent years. In contrast to conventional homogeneous networks, the key feature of HetNet is to increase the opportunity of spatial resource reuse and improve the quality of service of users by allowing small cells to cooperate in macrocell networks. However, since the mutual interference among different users and the limited resource are existing in HetNets, efficient resource allocation (RA) schemes are very important to reduce the interference and achieve spectrum sharing. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on RA in HetNets for 5G communications. Specifically, we first introduce the definition and different network scenarios of HetNet. Second, RA models are discussed. Then, we present classification to analyze current RA schemes in the existing references. Finally, some challenging open issues and future research trends are addressed in this field. We also provide two effective approaches for the sixth-generation (6G) communications to solve the RA problems of future HetNets, namely, a learning-based approach and a control theory-based approach. This paper provides important information on HetNets, which can be used to guide the development of more efficient RA schemes in this area.

Base station (BS) coordination with respect to data and energy cooperation has recently emerged as a potential solution for enhancing the energy efficiency (EE) of multi-cell multi-tier cellular network architecture. This work studies the EE maximization problem in a hybrid-powered (grid and renewable energy source) heterogeneous network (HetNet) where the data and energy are jointly coordinated among the BSs. We propose a combinatorial optimization algorithm to maximize the system EE with the aim to reduce grid power consumption (GPC). Due to the complexity of the formulation, Lagrange dual decomposition and metaheuristic method are incorporated to solve the problem. Furthermore, the nonfractional programming EE problem is solved using the Dinkelbach's method which converges faster with a lower complexity. Simulation results show that cooperation among the BSs to share the channel information and energy reduces the GPC by nearly 20% and increases EE around 10% during harvested energy scarcity among the BSs.
