A Primer for Conducting Survey Research Using MTurk

Abstract: This paper presents best practices for conducting survey research using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Readers will learn the benefits, limitations, and trade-offs of using MTurk as compared to other recruitment services, including SurveyMonkey and Qualtrics. A synthesis of survey design guidelines along with a sample survey are presented to help researchers collect the best quality data. Techniques, including SPSS and R syntax, are provided that demonstrate how users can clean resulting data and identify val… Show more

“…Amazon's MTurk electronic (Internet-based) survey tool was used to collect data for the study. Using this Internet-based survey tool allowed the researcher to collect data from participants in various health care institutions, therefore increasing the generalizability of the findings of this research study (Chambers, Nimon, & Anthony-McMann, 2016).…”

“…There are two main concerns around technical challenges: (a) lack of basic computer skills of the user; and (b) incompatibility of survey coding/complex survey design on the computer of the respondent (Dillman, Tortora, & Bowker, 1999;Shannon et al, 2002). The use of Amazon's MTurk can reduce the likelihood of both of these issues (Chambers et al, 2016). The first area of concern can be addressed through targeting a population which is already familiar with basic computer skills (e.g., Amazon's MTurk participants); since Amazon MTurk participants are familiar with basic computer skills, this should minimize the issue of respondents experiencing difficulty in completing the survey.…”
