A Problem-Oriented Design Method for Product Innovation

Abstract: This article proposes a systematic innovation approach by integrating the function analysis and trimming method into the conceptual design activities of new product development (NPD). Concept design is considered to be one of the pivotal phases in NPD process, which has a significant impact on downstream NPD activities such as ideas selection and detail design. Despite the recognized importance of concept design, there is a lack of a systematic and effective problem-solving process that covers all concept desi… Show more

“…As the central pillar of this phase is the “functions,” it becomes crucial to conceptualize them. We can define “function” as an action performed by a material object to change an attribute of another material object or to maintain the attribute of another material object (Ko, 2011). Thus, a function is an action performing by the product, and it must always be treated as a verb.…”

“…Como o pilar principal dessa fase são as "funções", tornase importante conceituá-las. Pode-se definir "função" como uma ação executada por um objeto material para alterar um atributo de outro objeto material ou para manter o atributo de outro objeto material (Ko et al, 2011). Assim, uma função é uma ação a ser realizada pelo produto e deve ser tratada sempre como um verbo.…”

“…[20] Present a model regarding iterative project management, or spiral model, in which flexible changing of work specifications are possible, avoiding the need of restart the whole project from the beginning, modifying only the necessary steps when market changes occur. There are other kind of proposed managing models for SIPSNP projects that are more flexible and agile, widely used by companies worldwide and scientifically known, like simultaneous or concurrent engineering [54][55][56][57], and Stage-Gate® [58][59][60].…”
