A programmable implantable micro-stimulator SoC with wireless telemetry: Application in closed-loop endocardial stimulation for cardiac pacemaker

Abstract: The use of closed-loop implantable telemetry devices [1,2] is increasing as recent clinical studies have shown their efficiency and usefulness in detecting and treating various cardiac arrhythmias. In this paper, we present a single-chip closed-loop system providing closed-loop feedback of sensed cardiac patterns. This device promises more optimized stimulation parameters to cure rapid arrhythmias compared with open-loop devices. Our system incorporates more functionality comparing with the conventional micro-… Show more

“…Implantable electronic circuits are essential part of modern medical implants with applications such as heart pace makers [1], cochlear and retinal implants [2]. Although required power for signal processing in the implanted circuits has been reduced to tens of microwatts [3], still efficient methods of supplying power to these circuits are the bottleneck of their widespread application.…”

“…Fig.1 shows the building blocks of wireless power transfer system at near field operation region. The total power transfer efficiency of the link (η T ) is related to the efficiency of its building blocks according to: T PA Coupling Re ctifier Re gulator η = η ×η ×η ×η (1) in which the η PA , η Coupling , η Rectifier and η Regulator are Power Amplifier (PA), inductive coupling, rectifier and voltage regulator efficiencies respectively. The maximum base station power radiation is restricted due to overheating of the body tissues or frequency regulations.…”

“…Amplitude modulation (AM) is used in both tag-to-reader and read-to-tag data communication links. In this study, the proposed energy-harvesting circuit not only can provide power to the rechargeable battery by charger [3] but also has the capability of amplitude shift keying (ASK) demodulation with error correction to overcome the motion artifact of body and the process-voltage-temperature (PVT) variation in the implementation.…”

“…In recent years, implantable cardiac microstimulator devices, such as pacemakers, have been developed and reported . To acquire heartbeat signals, the analog front‐end circuitry , an essential interface between the lead (sensor) and signal processors, is required. A block diagram of the telemetry device for implantable cardiac microstimulators is shown in Figure .…”
