A proposed framework for Construction 4.0 based on a review of literature

Abstract: Construction 4.0 is the adoption and adaptation of the Industry 4.0 framework for the construction sector. Industry 4.0 promises to revolutionize how ‘things’ are made by using physical and digital technologies in an integrated manner. Similarly, the authors envision that the Construction 4.0 framework can fundamentally change the way that assets are designed, constructed, and operated. The idea of the Construction 4.0 developed from the need of the construction sector to overcome the existing horizontal, vert… Show more

“…Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a pressing need in the construction industry to increase productivity, improve project performance, address labor shortage, reduce fragmentation, introduce standardization, and increase collaboration (Oesterreich and Teuteberg, 2016;Barbosa et al, 2017;Nassereddine et al, 2020aNassereddine et al, , 2020bEl Jazzar et al, 2020aBou Hatoum et al, 2020;Hatoum and Nassereddine, 2020;Sawhney et al, 2020). In addition to that, the labor-intensive nature of construction projects and the dynamic nature of construction sites make the construction industry one of most hazardous industries in the world (OSHA, 2019;OSHA, 2020a;Eurostat, 2020;.…”

“…Finally, one of the vital growth indicators for an industrial sector is the presence of peer networks for information, benchmarking, and feedback. The same is valid for adaptation of construction 4.0 as well, where there is an imminent organic need for the development of such peer networks (Sawhney et al, 2020). However, construction 4.0 still lacks from having such knowledge networks currently…”

“…This nature can be attributed to the unique challenges faced by the industry in terms of labor-intensive processes and uncertainty in project implementations. Further, the construction industry experiences significant fragmentation in various dimensions that serve as barriers to innovation (Sawhney et al, 2020). Thus, a slow rate of transformation is usually witnessed in this sector, underlining the complexity of the industry and its conservative nature to disruptive changes (Forcael et al, 2020).…”

“…The conceptual model of a digital ecosystem consists of a business network of third-party developers, boundary objects, and a core digital platform [34]. The ultimate goal is to create an interconnected environment that integrates organizations, processes, and information with the purpose of efficiently designing, constructing, and operating assets [54]. According to a report of the Digital Supply Chains in the Built Environment Work Group (DSCiBE) [55], the introduction of BIM can be considered the first step towards a collaborative digital communication and has also pushed the construction industry to look at how it can deliver value through data.…”
