A Quadruply Stranded Metallohelicate and Its Spontaneous Dimerization into an Interlocked Metallohelicate

Abstract: Making up a foursome: Self‐assembly of 4,4′‐(3‐pyridinemethoxy)benzophenone (L) and Pd(NO3)2 resulted in the quantitative formation of a quadruply stranded metallohelicate [Pd2(L)4], which undergoes spontaneous dimerization to an unprecedented chiral interlocked metallohelicate [Pd2(L)4]2 (see X‐ray structure; C black, H white, N blue, O red).

“…[59] Despite this assembly route having been known for over a decade, however, there are only a few [2]catenanes based on discrete metallocages so far. [33,[60][61][62][63] The first [2]catenane based on metallocages was prepared by Fujita and co-workers in 1999. [59] As shown in Figure 23, the [2]catenane consists of two identical metallocages [Pt 3 (en) 3 (L 30 )(tpt)] 61 , which is assembled from one molecular 21 .…”

“…More recently, Kuroda and co-workers synthesised a monomeric Pd 2 L 4 cage that could be quantitatively converted to the catenated dimer upon heating. 68 Similarly, Clever and coworkers were able to control reversible catenation of metallosupramolecular cage structures through titration of halide anions, small enough to sit within the cavity of the cage dimer and negate the positive charges of proximal palladium ions. Surprisingly, addition of an excess of halide ions resulted in displacement of ligands to give a metallo- [3]-catenane composed of three interlocked dinuclear metallocycles (Fig 15).…”
