A.R. Luria’s cultural neuropsychology in the 21st century

Abstract: Luria has long been one of the most influential authors in cognitive neurosciences, in particular in neuropsychology. New scientific advances and clinical observations have confirmed many of his proposals and hypotheses. In this paper one of his major ideas is analyzed: the influence of cultural factors on human cognition. The systemic-dynamic Lurian analysis of brain activity is based on Vygotsky's concept of higher mental functions, which are social in origin and complex and dynamic in their structure. Highe… Show more

“…Cultural characteristics have dramatically changed during the last half-century with the development of new media and new virtual ways of communication ( Kotik-Friedgut and Ardila, 2019 ). Existing research has shown that the neural resources of the brain are always adapted to the ever-increasing complexity and scale of social interaction to ensure that individuals are not marginalized by society ( Dunbar and Shultz, 2007 ).…”

“…We currently know that several fascicles located in the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres connect distant brain regions with each other and establish networks of connections that are responsible for the behavior and functionality of humans and other vertebrates. 21 These fascicles allow for fast and accurate connections between different areas that constitute a complete functional system 22 or cognitive network 16,23 that are the basis for the manifestation of a complex behavior or function (Figure 4). Short fascicles, called U-shaped fibers, connect neurons located in neighboring gyri.…”

“…Luria was among the pioneers pointing out that culture significantly impacts human cognition (Kotik-Friedgut & Ardila, 2020). He emphasized that higher mental functions are developed within a specific cultural-historical environment.…”
