A Raman scattering investigation of the magnetic ordering in the two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet LiCrO2

Abstract: Raman scattering experiments were performed on the two-dimensional hiangular lattice antiferromagnet LiCrO2 to investigate its magnetic ordering. Besides two phonon lines which are assigned~ to the E, and the AI, modes of DM point symmetry, additional lines having broader linewidth than that of the phonon lines are observed at low temperatures. Their intensity becomes weak with increasing temperature, but they are still observable above TN = 62 K, a value that was determined by neutron diffraction experiments,… Show more

“…The Raman spectra measured for the polycrystalline sample of LiCrO 2 is shown in Figure 3. The two Raman active modes E g and A 1g appear at 456 and 589 cm −1 , respectively, and matches well with the previously reported values [46].…”

“…Using group-theory analysis, the total irreducible representation for the zone centre optic modes of LiCrO 2 is obtained as A 1g + 2A 2u + E g + 2E u . Among them, two modes (A 1g and E g ) are Raman active [45,46]. For the A 1g mode, the atomic shift of oxygen atoms is along the c-axis, whereas the E g mode corresponds to vibrations in perpendicular directions.…”

“…27 In the molten chloride salt, enrichment of Cr(III) at the surface leads to the formation of LiCrO 2 , as discussed in the Thermogravimetry section. The outward diffusion of Cr and subsequent reaction with molten salt resulted in the formation of LiCrO 2 .…”

“…The Raman peaks were assigned based on the Raman data published in literature. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27] The Raman spectrum of 9Cr-1Mo steel (Figure 7[a]) exhibited dominant peaks at 228, 290, 403, and 1,300 cm -1 corresponding to the alpha phase of Fe 2 O 3 , [21][22][23] and the peaks at 504, 585, and 690 cm -1 correspond to the gamma phase of Fe 2 O 3 . 24-25 A broad peak at 690 cm -1 was attributed to FeCr 2 O 4 spinel phase 26 and the broad signature was due to the overlapping of the spinel phase with γ-Fe 2 O 3 .…”

“…Previous work on LiCrO 2 has established that it possesses ␣-NaFeO 2 -type structure comprising two-dimensional triangular chromium layers. 6 Magnetic susceptibility data 6,7 indicate a transition at around 62 K. Published susceptibility data could be fitted with a Curie-Weiss law only above 450 K and the paramagnetic Curie temperature is reported in the range 570-700 K. [6][7][8] Neutron scattering and Raman scattering studies [9][10][11] suggest a three-dimensional character of the magnetic correlations below the transition temperature ͑T N ͒. Above T N , measurements indicate a wide region showing short-range magnetic correlations.…”
