A Rapid Point-of-Care Test for the Serodiagnosis of Hepatitis Delta Virus Infection

Abstract: Hepatitis Delta virus (HDV) is a satellite of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and causes severe liver disease. The estimated prevalence of 15–20 million infected people worldwide may be underestimated as international diagnostic guidelines are not routinely followed. Possible reasons for this include the limited awareness among healthcare providers, the requirement for costly equipment and specialized training, and a lack of access to reliable tests in regions with poor medical infrastructure. In this study, we de… Show more

“…[123] Recently, an HDV rapid test based on a lateral flow assay has been reported to reliably detect anti-HDV antibodies. [124] Unlike EIA-PCR or qRT-PCR-based assays, sampling does not have to be performed in batches, and it does not require specialized laboratory equipment or personnel. Furthermore, a consensus pangenotypic recombinant HDAg, allowing the detection of anti-HDV from different genotypes, was generated.…”

“…In Taiwan, the number of deaths caused by liver cancer is the highest or second highest among all deaths caused by cancers [ 27 , 28 ]. A main factor causing liver cancer is HBV infection, and approximately 400 million people worldwide have the virus [ 29 , 30 ]. The main route of transmission is through blood or body fluids.…”

“…Contact of a test strip with the tested sample initiates the lateral flow of the immune reactants along the membranes and the assay results can be visualized within 10–15 min by the coloration of the test strip zones [ 5 ]. Successful development of the LFIA-based serodiagnosis of various diseases is presented in several publications [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. As an additional application, the assessment of the vaccine effectiveness and the organism’s protection against infections can be mentioned [ 11 , 12 ].…”
