A recently discovered amphibian trackway (Dromillopus quadrifidus) at Joggins, Nova Scotia

Abstract: In 1990, a hypotype of the ichnospecies Dromillopus quadrifidus Matthew, 1905 was discovered preserved as a cast in a rockfall of fine-grained Pennsylvanian (Westphalian B) sandstone at Joggins, Nova Scotia. The hypotype of this tetrapod trackway, while possessing all the morphological features evident in the holotype, is about five times larger. It also exhibits relatively subtle salamandroid affinities, thus helping confirm the original assignation. Minimum length of the adult amphibian trackmaker is estimat… Show more

“…al 2005;Holmes and Carroll 2010). Fewer papers have focussed on vertebrate and invertebrate trackways, but include those by: Ferguson (1966Ferguson ( , 1975 on Arthropleura trackways (Diplichnites); Sarjeant and Mossman (1978), who reviewed vertebrate trackways; and Mossman and Grantham (1996) on an amphibian trackway (Dromillopus). Dawson (1890) and Matthew (1903Matthew ( , 1905 outlined 13 "species" of tetrapod trackways, but there has been very little recent work synthesizing the knowledge of vertebrate and especially invertebrate traces.…”

“…Continued field work at Joggins led to several more publications on temnospondyl remains (Baird, 1982;Godfrey et al, 1987;Milner, 1996;Holmes et al, 1998;Robinson et al, 2005), the 'microsaur' fauna (e.g. Carroll, 1963;Stevenson and Stevenson, 1966;Stevenson, 1967;Reisz and Modesto, 1996), embolomerous tetrapods (Godfrey et al, 1991;Holmes and Carroll, 2010) and tetrapod trackways (Matthew, 1903;1905;Sarjeant and Mossman, 1978;Mossman and Grantham, 1996;Prescott et al, 2013). Soon after this new wave of interest in the JFC, sedimentologist Martin Gibling from Dalhousie University and his graduate student John Calder began a long-term research group, which has continued the geological and paleontological study of the cliffs to this day (Falcon-Lang, 2006).…”
