A redesign of OGC Symbology Encoding standard for sharing cartography

Abstract: Despite most Spatial Data Infrastructures offering service-based visualization of geospatial data, requirements are often at a very basic level leading to poor quality of maps. This is a general observation for any geospatial architecture as soon as open standards as those of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) are applied. To improve the situation, this paper does focus on improvements at the portrayal interoperability side by considering standardization aspects. We propose two major redesign recommendations… Show more

“…Researchers are constantly improving existing DCMs to meet new demands. Bocher and Ertz [30] redesigned OGC SE to enable the description of the compound 2D symbol. Rylov and Zipf [31] proposed improvements to the label placement of OGC SE.…”

“…As illustrated in Figure 2, we introduce SemanticTransformation for the 3D boundary explosion and Un-bounded3DStroke for the unbounded 3D space with parameterized vertical line components. The class name in the model is kept close, if possible, to those in ISO 19117, OGC SE, and Bocher and Ertz's model [30]. In the proposed 3D cadastre DCM, the symbolic rule is organized by FeatureTypeStyle class.…”

“…In our AR/MR experimentations, augmented data contain mainly 3D models, coming from a 3D reference database or from an urban project, requiring to be rendered in a 3D environment. Therefore, we call for an extension of existing stylization specifications from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), such as Style Layer Descriptor (SLD) and Symbology Encoding (SE) specifications (Lupp, 2007, Müller, 2006, Bocher and Ertz, 2018, to 3D standards formalizing 3D styles, as started in (Christophe et al, 2016, Brasebin et al, 2016, such as illumination properties and possible expressive stylizations.…”
