“…Other tissues as well as the fibrillary plate exhibit orthogonally arranged collagen plies such as the basal lamella of animal epidermis (11) and that of the cornea (12). The scleroblasts, cells that reside as a pseudo-epithelium on the fibrillary plate (10), are fibroblastic in that they appear to synthesize the collagen of the plate and are not separated from the collagen fibrils by a basement membrane (ref.…”

“…A high transparency of the dermis therefore seems important for the activity of the pigment cells. Initially, the subepidermal region of the fish skin, characterised by a plywood-like organisation of the collagen fibrils, was called "subepidermal collagenous lamella" (Fujii, 1968) and even renamed "basement lamella" (Nadol et al, 1969). This collagenous stroma constitutes the first deposited matrix of the future dermis, and in order to avoid confusion with the basement membrane, we suggest to use "collagenous dermal stroma " for the larval and early juvenile skin and "stratum compactum" instead of "basement lamella" for the adult skin.…”

“…Each stratum is composed of filaments of one orientation; the orientation of the filaments in the next stratum is at 90 ~ to the first, and so on. The image is reminiscent of the packing of collagen fibers in a fish scale (26) and in the cornea (15). Yet, as is true for the small islands of filaments in the [~ellet of G-actin, the filaments, which measure 55 A in diameter, are readily identifiable regardless of whether they are in transverse, longitudinal, or oblique section.…”
