A review and revisit of nanoparticles for antimicrobial drug delivery

Abstract: Antimicrobials are widely used to treat bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Therefore, research and development of newer types of antimicrobials are important. Antimicrobial resistance has emerged as a major challenge to the healthcare system, although various alternative antimicrobials have been proposed. However, none of these show consistent and comparable efficacy to antimicrobials in clinical trials. More recently, nanoparticles have emerged as a potential solution to antimicrobial agents to overcome … Show more

“…Nanocarriers may be used to treat infectious diseases due to their ability to transfer antibiotics to the target, thus altering the pharmacological properties of antibiotics by increasing their absorption or increasing their delivery to the tissues and the target microbial cells [134,[137][138][139]. One typical example is encochleated amphotericin B, a novel formulation of a well-known antifungal drug [138,139].…”

“…The most commonly used metallic nanoparticles for drug delivery are silver, gold, iron oxide, copper and zinc (Chouhan & Mandal, 2021). These nanoparticles in veterinary science have been chiefly used as antiviral and antimicrobial agents (Liew et al, 2022).…”

“…All these parameters influence not only the NP stability but also their expected application’s efficacy, consequently even the surface charge (Abbaszadegan et al 2015 ) and organic composition from biogenic (Piacenza et al 2018 ) will influence the antimicrobial efficacy. Beyond the metal core and the cap, researchers also explored NPs of other materials such as lipids, carbohydrates or other polymers to be carriers of the antimicrobial (Mercan, 2022 ; Liew et al 2022 ). From this, we see antimicrobial nano formulations being produced that have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal or antiparasitic properties.…”
