A review of bioenergetic modelling for marine mammal populations

Abstract: Bioenergetic models describe the processes through which animals acquire energy from resources in the environment and allocate it to different life history functions. They capture some of the fundamental mechanisms regulating individuals, populations and ecosystems and have thus been used in a wide variety of theoretical and applied contexts. Here, I review the development of bioenergetic models for marine mammals and their application to management and conservation. For these long-lived, wide-ranging species,… Show more

“…With the ultimate goal of improving bioenergetic modelling, this review highlights the current empirical information on important parameters, which can be utilized in the latest modelling approaches ( Pirotta, 2022 , this Special Issue) to collectively drive this research topic ahead and improve conservation efforts for impacted species and populations. Sensitivity analyses of available models, which now span the reproductive strategies of most marine mammals, would be very useful to help identify uncertain and impactful parameters and guide research effort.…”

“…the effort expended on movement, maintenance of body processes, growth and reproduction), and the energy they can extract from their environment ( Schneider, 2004 ). Bioenergetics, the study of how animals achieve such balance, integrates biotic and abiotic influences, including intrinsic and extrinsic factors (see Pirotta, 2022 , this Special Issue), and can be used in conservation to understand the effects of stressors on an individual and the resulting dynamics on populations ( Costa, 2012 ; Chimienti et al ., 2020 ; Gallagher et al ., 2021 ; Keen et al ., 2021 ). Although several recent studies have advanced our understanding of the processes that influence energy use in animals, relatively little is known of the trade-offs that control energy intake.…”

“…Modeling approaches range from static "accounting" models, where the primary goal is often to estimate individual-and populationlevel prey consumption, to more dynamic approaches that simulate the allocation of energy to different processes (e.g. metabolism, growth, reproduction) to examine populationlevel processes, often within an individual-based modeling framework (Pirotta, 2022).…”
