A Review of Biomimetic Air Vehicle Research: 1984-2014

Abstract: Biomimetic air vehicles (BAV) are a class of unmanned aircraft that mimic the flapping wing kinematics of flying organisms (e.g. birds, bats, and insects). Research into BAV has rapidly expanded over the last 30 years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive bibliometric review of engineering and biology journal articles that were published on this subject between 1984 and 2014. These articles are organized into five topical categories: aerodynamics, guidance and control, mechanisms, structures and materials… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the contribution percentages of these top eight countries amounted to 78%. These data confirmed the existence of a reduced number of countries that dominate the publication of documents in this research field, in a similar way to other topics, including the full list of engineering branches [45,78,79]. However, a more in-depth look at the countries in Table 3 concluded that the research in this topic was clearly led by European countries, since USA was the unique top country that did not belong to the European Union.…”

“…Therefore, the sum of the number of documents in these categories is above the total number of documents, and a similar result can be found in percentages, with results above 100%. The existence of a reduced number of countries that dominate the publication of scientific documents was expected, as this pattern is very common in most scientific fields [51][52][53], including civil engineering [54,55]. The top 10 countries in Table 2 produced more than 85% of the total number of documents.…”

“…Biomimetic flying robots have been under study for almost 30 years [45] and insects have gained a special focus as an effective source of inspiration [46]. Indeed, insects are small and some of them have excellent flying capabilities.…”
