A Review of Cyclodextrin Encapsulation and Intelligent Response for the Release of Curcumin

Abstract: To overcome the low water solubility and low bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), multiple delivery strategies have been proposed. Among these, cyclodextrin-based carriers have been widely used for the encapsulation and delivery of CUR. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as natural oligosaccharides, have been well known for their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and internal hydrophobic and external hydrophilic structural features. This paper summarizes the recently reported CD-based carriers for encapsulatin… Show more

“…The encapsulation of active compounds from Melissa officinalis leaves in β-cyclodextrin and modified starch was equally successful [ 55 ]. The effectiveness of other cyclodextrins in the encapsulation process was demonstrated in a review paper by Li et al [ 56 ].…”

“…Cyclodextrins are characterised by their hydrophilic circular truncated cone shape. When combined with a molecule, cyclodextrins can easily form a host-guest supramolecular complex [ 135 ]. This cone shape has a hydrophobic hollow conical cavity with a depth of 7.9 Å [ 136 ].…”

“…This method provided a light-yellow, fluffy powder with excellent aqueous solubility. After the incorporation of curcumin, the complex was encapsulated in chitosan to ensure the transport to human skin cancer cells, which showed higher cytotoxicity [ 135 ].…”

“…[40] Due to its high hydrophobicity, Cur exhibits low serum and plasma levels, constrained biodistribution, rapid metabolism, and fast elimination from the body. [41] To improve both Cur physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties have been designed and developed different strategies, including the use of cyclodextrins, [42][43][44][45] however, to the best of our knowledge, nothing has been described about the formation of complexes by mechanochemistry between Cur and CDs.…”
