A review of droughts on the African continent: a geospatial and long-term perspective

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents a comprehensive review and analysis of the available literature and information on droughts to build a continental, regional and country level perspective on geospatial and temporal variation of droughts in Africa. The study is based on the review and analysis of droughts occurred during 1900-2013, as well as evidence available from past centuries based on studies on the lake sediment analysis, tree-ring chronologies and written and oral histories and future predictions from the g… Show more

“…Funk, C., and A. Hoell, 2015 2015). Political instability and the high dependence of GHoA's population on rain-fed agriculture exacerbate the impacts of droughts (Love 2009;Masih et al 2014). Most areas of the GHoA experience two rainy seasons: the "long rains" during March-June as the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) crosses the equator from south to north and the "short rains" during October-December as the ITCZ returns to the south .…”

“…It should be mentioned that most African countries during the last 5 decades were exposed to drought periods, which started in the 1960s and reached a peak in 1984. Consequently, these drought periods affected every African environmental system, particularly Sudan and Ethiopia (Mattsson and Rapp, 1991;Elagib and Elhag, 2011;Masih et al, 2014).…”

“…Kisii county, that enhances convectional rainfall in the surrounding areas [3], while the lowest amount of rainfall recorded in 1984, can be attributed to drought conditions that was experienced in many parts of Africa in 1983 to 1984 [32]. Notably, the year 1997 experienced positive ENSO event while the year 2000 experienced negative ENSO event [24].…”
