A review of emerging industry 4.0 technologies in remanufacturing

Abstract: This paper reviews the literature on the emerging digital technologies of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) focussed on the applicability of the Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in remanufacturing. Inspired by the frameworks developed to support exploration and realisation of I4.0 technologies for disassembly, the paper discusses the same emerging technologies in the wider context of remanufacturing. Trends and gaps have been identified from a value-creation perspective that encompas… Show more

“…We add the strategy 'regenerate' to account for two additional aspects that are important for 'cleaner production' [58] and that have been stressed in early conceptions of the circular economy [5]: the minimized use of toxic substances; i.e., substances that are persistent and liable to bio-accumulate [59], and the need for an increase of renewable materials and energy in a circular economy [4,55]. In addition, we include 'inform' as a support strategy for firms because several publications have emphasized the importance of information technology in enabling a circular economy [57,[60][61][62][63]. The blue line in Figure 2 indicates the key strategies that can influence material and energy flows.…”

“…Finally, informing refers to using information technology as a support strategy for the circular economy [57,[60][61][62][63]93,94]. We include this support strategy because several practice and research projects have highlighted the importance of information technology for a circular economy; for example, the role of artificial intelligence [63], the internet of things [93,94], big data [95], or online platforms [57].…”

“…Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive picture, while other reviews surrounding the research field Industry 4.0 have focused on special aspects of the term, such as: -edge computing [16]; -additive manufacturing/three-dimensional printing [17]; -cyber-physical production systems [18]; -construction industry [19]; -remanufacturing [20]; -environmentally-sustainable manufacturing [21,22]; -interactions with the energy system [23].…”

“…Active use of Internet technologies, telecommunication means in full-time educational process allow to speak about introduction of innovative processes by means of which there are changes of the various plan: the purposes and the maintenance of curricula, forms and methods of training change. By means of Information technologies, teachers and students can use Internet services that help facilitate learning and speed up the educational process [11,13,15,18].…”
