A review of external microbeams for ion beam analyses

Abstract: Ion microbeam facilities are analytical tools with high spatial resolution exploiting MeV ion beams. The interactions of beam particles with atoms and nuclei of the target induce the emission of characteristic radiation, the energy of which provides signatures of the compositional and/or structural properties of the target; Ion-Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques, based on the detection of such radiation, enable characterisation of samples of interest, e.g. in material and earth sciences, cultural heritage, biology… Show more

“…MeV-SIMS can be quantified with simultaneously acquired PIXE [10], and since it uses an MeV ion beam can also be used in atmosphere. External-beam IBA is widely used, and has recently been reviewed [11].…”

“…The samples have overlapping pigment particles and a cut through the pigments at the surface. All samples consist of linseed oil with a mean composition of C 18 H 31 O 2 and a mass density of 0.93 g/cm 3 (grey) and lead white 2PbCO 3 ·Pb(OH) 2 with a mass density of 6.14 g/cm 3 (white), see Table 1. Sample sizes used for the simulations were 4096x100 pixels with a pixel size of 500 nm, corresponding to sample sizes of 2048x50 µm 2 .…”

“…Typically an external beam of 2-3 MeV protons is used [3] and elastic backscattering spectroscopy (EBS), particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and particle induced -ray emission (PIGE) data are combined [4]. The measured spectra are being used for quantitative depth profiling of elements and for the determination of total amounts of trace elements [5].…”

“…Standard IBA techniques are used to characterize the irradiated object. By raster-scanning the beam over the sample surface, a 2D or 3D distribution of elements can be determined with nm depth resolution and lateral resolution limited by the size of the beam spot, see Figure 2 [4,5,6].…”
