A Review of IoT Sensing Applications and Challenges Using RFID and Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless sensors networks (WSNs) are two fundamental pillars that enable the Internet of Things (IoT). RFID systems are able to identify and track devices, whilst WSNs cooperate to gather and provide information from interconnected sensors. This involves challenges, for example, in transforming RFID systems with identification capabilities into sensing and computational platforms, as well as considering them as architectures of wirelessly connected sensing tags. This, … Show more

“…In the last decades, also agriculture is benefiting from the technological advances in electronics, computers technology and communication fields [ 1 , 2 ]. In this context, great relevance is ascribable to the DSSs, a wide range of software tools that based on several input data related to soil and environmental parameters, acquired by sensor nodes distributed on the cultivated land, to weather forecasts, to crops’ growth status or pathogens presence, then help the farmer to make decisions relative to farm activities or issues to be addressed [ 3 ].…”

“…In work [ 37 ], the authors present a detailed review of IoT sensing applications in WSN and the difficulties and challenges that need to be overcome. Some of these challenges are fault tolerance, the effectiveness of the energy harvesting, communication interference, cost feasibility, and an appropriate integration of these elements.…”

“…The authors of [ 24 ] present a comprehensive review of IoT sensing applications in WSNs, as well as the problems and tasks that need to be overcome. Some of the problem areas identified by authors are, for example, fault tolerance, the efficiency of the energy consumption, transmission interference, cost feasibility, and proper integration of these components.…”
