A Review of Microwave Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanomaterials: Reactants, Process Parameters and Morphologies

Abstract: Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a multifunctional material due to its exceptional physicochemical properties and broad usefulness. The special properties resulting from the reduction of the material size from the macro scale to the nano scale has made the application of ZnO nanomaterials (ZnO NMs) more popular in numerous consumer products. In recent years, particular attention has been drawn to the development of various methods of ZnO NMs synthesis, which above all meet the requirements of the green chemistry approach. … Show more

“…Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were obtained with the use of microwave solvothermal synthesis. 8,9 The method of obtaining ZnO NPs samples and their characterisation were described in detail in earlier publications of the authors. [4][5][6][7] The ZnO NPs used were characterised by the average particle size of ≈30 nm (Fig.…”

“…ZnO nanorods, nanospheres, nanotubes, nanowires, and nanoneedles have been obtained by tuning the chemical and physical parameters (solvent, precursors, pH, temperature, etc.) during synthesis [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Different reagents have been employed as capping agents, altering growth kinetics at certain facets and driving morphological diversity.…”

“…ZnO NPs are an inorganic compound appearing as a white powder and can be synthesized both by chemical methods (precipitation method, vapor transport method, and hydrothermal process) and biological methods using different plant extracts [5,[29][30][31]. ZnO NPs are used in various products, such as gas sensors, biosensors, optical devices, solar cells, semiconductors, catalysts, paints, rubber products, ceramic sunscreen cosmetics, and drug delivery systems [2][3][4][5]30,31]. They are expected to be the ideal candidate for a Zn fertilizer in agriculture, enhancing crop productivity since the efficiency of both sulfate and chelate of Zn for soil and foliar application is low [32].…”
