A Review of Porous Concrete Pavement: Applications and Engineering Properties

Abstract: Porous concrete technology has been used since 1970s in various parts of the United State as an option to complex drainage systems and water retention areas.Porous concrete pavements have become popular as an effective stormwater management device to control the stormwater runoff in pavement. The objective of this paper is to study a pre-review on Porous concrete pavement and it previous laboratory study. From the literature, it was found that, the strength of the porous concrete pavementstill need to improve.… Show more

“…It indicates that we have entered an intense phase of research on the development of high performance pervious concrete (HPPC) and the pace of research will likely continue to accelerate. There has been a number of review articles on PC [16][17][18]. The purpose of this article is not to repeat these reviews, but rather to promote the concept of sustainable pervious concrete pavement (SPCP).…”

“…2.1 HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE PC pavements must provide the necessary permeability for managing rainfall events that occur during their operational life, during which the whole percentage of total voids is not really interconnected [18]. Hence, although some authors obtained air void contents around 40% and even higher [19,20], the amount of interconnected air voids has been found to hardly surpass 30% [21,22]. This is mainly due to the compaction level used to build the pavement [23,24] (researchers mainly use the Proctor hammer, varying casting layers and blows), as well as to the utilization of more than one aggregate size in the mixture [25].…”

“…The high percentage of porosity in the structure tends to decrease its strength [17,18]. Cement paste is the important part in the porous concrete pavement structure [19]. By incorporating nano silica in the mixture, it can be predicted that the strengthening effect of nano silica would be further enhanced in concrete because the nano silica improve not only the cement paste, but also the interface between paste and aggregate [15].…”
