A review of the Cucurbitaceae

Abstract: Progress in studies of Cucurbitaceae since 1964 is reviewed, particular attention being paid to the roles of seed‐coat anatomy, palynology and phytochemistry in elucidating the taxonomy of the family; to the use of wild species and land‐races as sources of horticulturally desirable traits for the improvement of crops; to the potentialities of wild species for domestication as new crops for tropical areas, and to the biology of reproduction, sex control and sex expression. The classification of the lady is outl… Show more

“…However, within limits of the investigated species, the seed-coat anatomical features proved useful for species identification in Momordica from Nigeria [16]. Momordica charanthia, M. multiflora, and M. cabraei showed five distinct tissues, epidermis, hypodermis, sclerenchyma, aerenchyma, and collenchymatous parenchyma, whereas M. cissoids and M. foetida showed four distinct layers, lacking aerenchyma.…”

“…The exomorphyc and endomorphic features of the seeds of Cucurbitaceae have been critically analyzed and are considered valuable diagnostic characters for tribal or infrageneric classifications or for species identification [15,16] However, in the genus Momordica, the diversity of seed-coat anatomy have not been extensively explored yet. The Momordica genus is large, including about 60 species, with only a limited number of species being already investigated.…”

“…Cucumber, cucumis sativus L., is one of the most important crops, agriculturally and economically, in the world (Jeffrey 1980, Pitrat et al 1999. A draft of the genome for the cucumber (2nϭ2xϭ14) was recently published, having been determined used next-generation DNA sequencing technologies (Huang et al 2009).…”
