A review of the use of psychophysiological methods in game research

Abstract: This paper reviews the psychophysiological method in game research. The use of psychophysiological measurements provides an objective, continuous, real-time, non-invasive, precise, and sensitive way to assess the game experience, but for best results it requires carefully controlled experiments, large participant samples and specialized equipment. We briefly explain the theory behind the method and present the most useful measures. We review previous studies that have used psychophysiological measures in game … Show more

“…Kivikangas et al (2011) reviews a comprehensive list of references in the area of psychophysiological methods for game research. They emphasise that a commonly accepted theory for game experience does not currently exist with game researchers frequently using theoretical frameworks from other fields of study.…”

“…Most of them used immersion questionnaire [1,2,[22][23][24]. Some others employed psychological instrument [23,25,26], behavior during gameplay [27,28] and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) [29] to detect players' immersion level.…”

“…More recently, with the establishment of the new field of Affective Games [9,10], research on detecting affect in computer game players is rapidly growing in several directions including psychophysiology [11]. Generally, these studies apply the concepts and methodologies of traditional psychophysiology [12] to analyse the effect of different game aspects such as social experiences (e.g.…”
