A Review on Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Abstract: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes affecting over 90% of the diabetic patients. Due to the toxic effects of hyperglycemia there is development of this complication. It is typically characterized by significant deficits in tactile sensitivity, vibration sense, lower-limb proprioception, and kinesthesia. Painful DPN has been shown to be associated with significant reductions in overall quality of life, increased levels of anxiety and depression, sleep… Show more

“…One of the most relevant complications of T2DM is painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (PDPN) 2 4 6 . Clinically, PDPN is defined as pain that is a direct consequence of abnormalities in the peripheral somatosensory system in individuals with diabetes; the most common manifestation of the pain could be burning, aching, or shooting in nature 4 6 7 . In the UK, the estimated incidence of PDPN was 15.3 cases per 100 000 individual years in the primary care population in 2002 and this increased to 27.2 cases per 100 000 individuals in 2005 4 6 7 .…”
