A review on erosion of a Pelton turbine bucket

Abstract: Hydro-power energy is the most efficient renewable energy sources in the world. India stands in the top ten hydropower generation countries list. Pelton turbine is a well-known hydropower extraction machine. The Pelton turbine buckets play an important role in the efficiency of the hydro turbine which is in continuous interaction with high velocity jet and there are possibilities of damages to the bucket in the form of erosion as water contains small debris as sediments. Eroded buckets greatly reduce the effic… Show more

“…3 Even the existing HPPs face issues of reduction in generation efficiency and frequent shut-downs due to abrasive erosion in run-of-river HPPs located in geologically young mountains like the Himalayas, the Andes, and the Alps. 4,5 One of the most used hydraulic machinery in high-head HPPs is a Pelton turbine designed for high-velocity flows to convert the majority of the available hydraulic energy. In the Pelton turbines, even particles smaller than 60 µm can cause severe damage to the turbine components like injectors and buckets due to high flow velocities.…”
