A review on nanostructured silver as a basic ingredient in medicine: physicochemical parameters and characterization

Abstract: Recent studies with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the history of silver metal as a broad-spectrum bactericidal and virucidal agent, places silver as one of the future biocidal candidates in the field of nanomedicine to eliminate bacteria and viruses, especially multidrug resistant ones. In this review, we have described the various morphologies of AgNPs and correlated the enhanced bactericidal activity with their prominent {111} facets. In addition to prioritizing the characterization we have also discussed… Show more

“…Ag has a broad spectrum of efficient antibacterial properties that can inhibit various bacteria. Moreover, due to the diverse antibacterial mechanisms of Ag, it rarely causes resistance, making it a suitable choice for improving treatment [155,156]. Lin et al loaded Ag ions onto the surface of a titanium-tantalum alloy through a glandular oxidation method and then demonstrated through antibacterial experiments that the loading of Ag ions significantly improved the resistance of the alloy to S. aureus [122].…”

“…The beneficial capability of silver (Ag) for interacting with harmful substances, provoking their inactivation, is known from ancient times. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) exert their antibacterial effects at several levels since they act in the bacterial wall and by blocking electron transfer, as well as in the cell respiration and replication of damaging proteins, RNA, and DNA [21]. On the other hand, metal oxides can eradicate bacteria via electrostatic interactions, changing the integrity of bacterial membranes and the generation of free radicals, which are toxic to bacteria.…”
