A review on One Health approach in Ethiopia

Abstract: The risk of spreading emerging and reemerging diseases has been increasing by the interactions of human – animal – ecosystems and increases account for more than one billion cases, a million deaths and caused hundreds of billions of US dollars of economic damage per year in the world. Countries in which their household income is dependent on livestock are characterized by a strong correlation between a high burden of zoonotic disease and poverty. The One Health approach is critical for solutions to prevent, pr… Show more

“…Based on the simple principle of One Health, which states that human health is protected by protecting animals and their interactions with the environment, which are thus inextricably linked; for example, when we treat animals with antibiotics, these antibiotics can lead to resistance present in our microbiota, the microbiota of the animals, or the environment [12] . Regrettably, the use of pesticides, which were initially used to protect agricultural products from harmful insects, has an impact on human and animal health; even though these insecticides protect the environment due to contamination of the soil, groundwater, and rivers, but also animals raised in the open air, which in turn exposes humans to molecules harmful to their health [13] .…”

“…Countries worldwide must encourage higher education institutions to integrate One Health principles and philosophies into academic curricula and research areas. Moreover, diagnostic laboratory capacity must be increased, and government leadership must be advised or made aware of their commitment to the One Health approach [15]. To develop legal solutions for the implementation of One Health approach, identifying legal principles and institutional dynamics of relevant sectors beyond their sector specific legislation is important [21].…”

“…Therefore, food safety should be assured through an integrated multi-disciplinary approach [8,3,14]. This complex and interconnected health threat based on animal-human-environment interactions strongly requires inter-sectoral integration and/or collaboration not only to decrease the burden, but also to enable future effective prevention and control of all zoonotic diseases [3,15]. This goal can be achieved through the One Health approach and its coordination mechanisms.…”
