A revision of the genus Phellopsis LeConte (Coleoptera: Zopheridae)

Abstract: The world species of Phellopsis LeConte are revised based on the examination of all available material. Phellopsis obcordata (Kirby) and P. porcata (LeConte) are found to be valid vicariant species isolated in old growth boreal forest habitats of eastern and western North America, respectively. Phellopsis robustula Casey and P. montana Casey are placed as junior synonyms of P. porcata NEW SYNONYMIES. On the Asian continent, P. imurai Masumoto is placed in synonymy with P. amurensis (Heyden) NEW SYNONYMY. Phell… Show more

“…Megazopherus, Zopherinus, and Zopherodes were synonymized with Zopherus by Triplehorn (1972) and Noserodes, Sesaspis, and Verodes were synonymized with Nosoderma by Doyen and Lawrence (1979). Casey created 21 specific synonyms and 1 subspecies in Zopherus (Triplehorn 1972), 10 in Phloeodes (discussed later), 6 in Nosoderma (discussed later), 1 in Noserinus (Doyen and Lawrence 1979), and 2 in Phellopsis (Foley and Ivie 2008). Casey described 42 species of zopherids and only two, Zopherus uteanus (Casey 1907a), and V. championi appear to be truly valid species (Triplehorn 1972, and below).…”

“…Included in the Zopherini Solier (sensu Ð lipi½ski and Lawrence 1999) are all of the genera of larger zopherids, of the typical "ironclad" appearance that have always formed the core of the zopherid complex, except Phellopsis LeConte (Phellopsini, see Foley and Ivie 2008). With the exclusion of the genus Phellopsis, the remaining members of the Zopherini form a stable, probably monophyletic group (Ðlipi½ski and Lawrence 1999).…”

“…A tubercle is defined as a rounded protuberance of the cuticle that bears a single inserted seta. This differs from a nodule, which refers to a large, rounded or teardrop-shaped elevation of an entire cuticular area, which may bear multiple setae and/or tubercles on the surface (see Foley and Ivie 2008).…”

“…Three species ( Phellopsis obcordata (Kirby), Lasconotus borealis Horn, Synchita fuliginosa Melsheimer) were reported for the Maritime provinces ( Bousquet 1991 ; Campbell 1991b ; Majka et al 2006 ). Only Lasconotus borealis and Phellopsis obcordata were reported from New Brunswick ( Bousquet 1991 ; Majka et al 2006 ; Foley and Ivie 2008 ). Here, we report two additional species for the province.…”
