A Safe and Fast Repulsion Method for GPU-based Cloth Self Collisions

Abstract: Cloth dynamics and collision handling are the two most challenging topics in cloth simulation. While researchers have substantially improved the performances of cloth dynamics solvers recently, their success in fast collision detection and handling is rather limited. In this article, we focus our research on the safety, efficiency, and realism of the repulsion-based collision handling approach, which has demonstrated its potential in existing GPU-based simulators. Our first discovery is the necessary vertex di… Show more

“…In contrast, datadriven models are less computationally costly but it is difficult for them to give any guarantee on accuracy. PBS methods tend to model the real-world physics based on material properties of garments and deform them according to laws of physics using time integration, collision detection, and response computation [Li et al 2020;Müller 2008;Müller et al 2015;Müller et al 2007;Narain et al 2012;Tang et al 2016;Wang 2021;Wu et al 2020].…”

“…To exploit high parallel performance, a matrix assembly algorithm is proposed [TWT*16] which can accurately solve the linear system. For clothes with more than 50,000 vertices, research in Wu et al [WWYW20] can still achieve fast simulations because of the effective conversion of continuous constraints. In Figure 2: Overview of proposed method pipeline.…”

“…For clothes with more than 50,000 vertices, research in Wu et al. [WWYW20] can still achieve fast simulations because of the effective conversion of continuous constraints. In practice, we usually use physics‐based simulations as ground truth data for learning‐based deformation and train the model to be able to estimate effects close to those of the physics‐based simulations.…”

“…We refer readers to a thorough review by Osher and Fedkiw [OF03] and Gibou et al [GFO18] for a vast body of literature of the level set methods. In graphics, level set methods are used not only to track moving surfaces but also to simulate fracture [HJST13; WFL*19] and to detect collisions for cloth [WWYW20], solid [JST*16] and rigid bodies [MEM*20].…”
