A search for charmonium states produced in central pp interactions at 450 GeV/c

Abstract: A search for centrally produced charmonium states has been presented. There is no significant evidence for any charmonium production. An upper limit of 2 nb is found for the cross section of χ c production using the decay χ c (1P ) → J/ψγ.

“…The reduction factor is nearly compatible with the predicted 1 for Pomeron-Pomeron fusion and incompatible with the prediction of 0.2 for fusion. 2 A large number of centrally produced final states X has been studied by the WA102 collaboration, like , , [301], and KK [307][308][309]311], [315], [316], and [312], 3 [304,320], + − , , and [302,310], 4 [299,313,317], KK [300], [318], [303], K * K * and [305], baryon-antibaryon [306] and charmonium states [319]. Earlier experiments investigated the same channels but had smaller statistics.…”

“…Since it is impossible to determine the mass and quantum numbers of the produced particles from the initial state, the analysis is often rather complicated or even ambiguous. For the WA102 experiment, which used a 450 GeV/c proton beam onto a fixed target it turned out to be difficult to look for mesons in the charmonium region due to energy limitations [6].…”
