A Self‐Healing Aqueous Lithium‐Ion Battery

Abstract: Flexible lithium-ion batteries are critical for the next-generation electronics. However, during the practical application, they may break under deformations such as twisting and cutting, causing their failure to work or even serious safety problems. A new family of all-solid-state and flexible aqueous lithium ion batteries that can self-heal after breaking has been created by designing aligned carbon nanotube sheets loaded with LiMn O and LiTi (PO ) nanoparticles on a self-healing polymer substrate as electro… Show more

“…[152] The Li 2 SO 4 /CMC GPE was composed of a physically cross-linked CMC gel and Li 2 SO 4 aqueous solution, which showed a decent ionic conductivity of 0.12 S cm −1 at room temperature. Different from the combustible and toxic organic electrolytes, the aqueous Li 2 SO 4 /CMC GPE was nontoxic and stable in air.…”

“…Further study of the self-healing properties and their effect on battery design will be addressed in the future. 28 Further structural analysis was necessary to obtain thorough understanding of the materials. Even though poly(S-co-EAE) with high sulfur contents are insoluble due to the high amount of polysulfide chains, a soluble sample could be prepared with low sulfur content of 24 wt% (S-EAE-76, molar ratio of EAE : elemental sulfur = 1 : 2), enabling characterization with solution-based techniques.…”

“…[139][140][141][142][143] The low stretchability can be attributed to the unavoidable crack generated in rigid electrodes during repeating stretching process, which leads to the degradation or even loss of electrochemical performance of Li-ion batteries. As discussed above, the Si electrodes with self-healing polymer binder could withstand the generated stress and heal cracks inside the electrodes, providing a promising platform to design the stretchable Si electrodes for Li-ion batteries.…”
