A Shader Framework for Rapid Prototyping of GPU‐Based Volume Rendering

Abstract: In this paper, we present a rapid prototyping framework for GPU-based volume rendering. Therefore, we propose a dynamic shader pipeline based on the SuperShader concept and illustrate the design decisions. Also, important requirements for the development of our system are presented. In our approach, we break down the rendering shader into areas containing code for different computations, which are defined as freely combinable, modularized shader blocks. Hence, high-level changes of the rendering configuration … Show more

“…Processing such different data modalities in a single algorithm is called “multivariate data processing.” ClinicIMPPACT will therefore improve the field of multivariate data processing with real-time measures to visualize combined (structured) clinical CT data, (unstructured) simulation data and surface based segmentation data in a single first step. This can be achieved by dedicated methods, using a modern graphics processing unit (GPU) [9] , [31] , [32] .…”

“…They contain a map of keywords that represent specific functionalities described by a function template. and adding specific integration rules to the function definitions, these approaches are mostly limited to specific application domains [208] [265]. The effect adds the keywords that refer to the specific functionality into the shader library.…”

“…Systems such as Voreen [MSRMH09] and that of Rieder et al . [RPLH11] present a rapid prototyping approach for volume rendering where modular shader blocks can be combined to create a complete pipeline. The system relies on establishing a signature for the blocks that allows combination and communication to take place.…”
