A simultaneous measurement of the QCD colour factors and the strong coupling

Abstract: Using data from e + e − annihilation into hadrons, taken with the OPAL detector at LEP at the Z pole between 1991 and 1995, we performed a simultaneous measurement of the colour factors of the underlying gauge group of the strong interaction, C F and C A , and the strong coupling, α s . The measurement was carried out by fitting next-to-leading order perturbative predictions to measured angular correlations of 4-jet events together with multi-jet related variables. Our results, C A = 3.02 ± 0.25(stat.) ± 0.49(… Show more

“…The different shape of the generator curves can be explained by the fact that the data was corrected to the parton level, whereas the MC samples where generated with full hadronisation. In |cos θ N R |, the hadronisation corrections [23] would change the MC shapes towards a better agreement. cos α 34 is captured slightly better for cos α 34 ≈ −1, when including additional jets.…”

“…With a few notable exceptions not available for direct hadron-level MC comparisons, like the four-jet angles[13][14][15], observables directly sensitive to coherence[16], and colour-reconnection constraints[17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…To start with, measurements in 3-jet events by OPAL give C A /C F = 2.232 ± 0.14 [30], while the 3-jet measurements by DELPHI lead to C A /C F = 2.26 ± 0.16 [31]. Studies of the electroweak 4-jet kinematic by ALEPH gives C A = 2.93 ± 0.60 and C F = 1.35 ± 0.27 [32], a similar analysis by OPAL quotes C A = 3.02 ± 0.56 and C F = 1.34 ± 0.30 [33] . In both 4-jet analyses there exists a strong, positive correlation between C A and C F .…”
