“…One of the most serious effects of World Trade Organization (WTO) membership and free trade agreements is the lowered external protection/barriers (e.g. tariffs) which has resulted in higher competition in internal markets (Mizik, 2012). However, one of the most enduring forms of non-tariff barriers is that of consumer ethnocentrism (Shimp and Sharma, 1987).…”

The confiscated land was awarded to landless peasants and farmers with insufficient land.…”

“…The general characteristic of the Western Balkans' agriculture is that the majority of the producers are smallholders. The main reason for this situation is the former Yugoslavian agricultural policy (farm size limit 10 hectares) [17,18]. Beside its low size (4.7 ha/farm), in most cases farms are formed from small parcels, often dislocated from each other, which makes the production more costly and less efficient., Some 250.000 farms (50%) are less than 2 hectares, and 400.000 or 80% are less than 5 hectares, while only 4% have areas beyond 10 hectares [31].…”

“…Countries that are in the process of EU accession must take more care about the compliance of the agricultural support system with the mechanism provided for in the CAP (Erjevec et al, 2014). A big challenge for these countries will be the competitiveness of processing and distribution systems that will be under pressure in the EU single market, and it is very important for these sectors to improve efficiency and competitiveness during the preparations for accession, in order to take advantage of the much greater market potential in the EU (Mizik and Meyers, 2013).…”
