A Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) Based Framework for Evaluating Managed Learning Environments

Abstract: Managed Learning Environments (MLEs) in higher education institutions (HEIs) are relatively new to the arena of higher education, even though there are over 90% of institutions in the higher and further education sector who are currently engaged in some kind of MLE development activity (University of Brighton 2003). However, when it comes to the task of assessing the performance of an MLE there are no universally recognisable frameworks for evaluating MLEs in HEIs currently discussed within the literature. The… Show more

“…Similarly, the reliable and stakeholder-representative evaluation of technologymediated learning is a long-standing concern of many researchers (Hardman and Paucar-Caceres 2010;Jackson 1990;Oliver 2000;Voigt and Swatman 2004). As for the aforementioned requirements engineers, educationists also accept that evaluation of learning platforms cannot take place in isolation of teaching and learning or student experience contexts (Phillips and Gilding 2003).…”

“…Soft systems methodology (Checkland, ) is regarded as being sensitive to multiple stakeholders' interests (Hardman and Paucar‐Caceres, ). Nevertheless, it has been criticized for lacking sensitivity to power structures (Flood, ; Mingers, ).…”

“…and "the solution" (Checkland 1985;Hardman & Paucar-Caceres 2011). Checkland (1985 questioned who should determine that the problem defined is "the real problem" and that the objective stated is "the desired one" because many problems and objectives in real situations are both vague and unstructured.…”

“…"SSM is not about analysing systems found in the world but about applying systems principles to structured thinking about things that happen in the world" (Hardman & Paucar-Caceres 2011). SSM suggests that observation or theory will not be able to embrace understanding, it requires a further method to grasp "authentic" explanations about people's perspectives (Flood 2000).…”
