A Software Framework for the Automated Production of Schematic Maps

Abstract: Abstract. Schematic Maps are mainly used for depicting transportation networks. They are generated through a schematization process where irrelevant details are eliminated and important details are emphasized. This process, being manually performed by teams of expert designers, is expensive and time consuming. Such manual execution is unsuitable for the production of schematic maps for location-based services or ondemand schematic maps, as near real-time and user-centered properties are needed. This work propo… Show more

“…Mourinho et al from Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Mourinho et al, 2010;Joao Mourinho, 2011) have investigated the production of spider maps having contributions from some companies including a company based in London which produces maps for transportation networks called FWT. This framework is called GeneX and allows the use of different schematization algorithms (genetic, linear, tabu search, GRASP, etc.)…”

“…Current search-based methods for schematic layout include hill-climbing (Section 2.2), mixed-integer programming (Section 2.3) and ant-colony systems (Section 2.4). Other work in automated layout of schematics include spider diagrams [14] and schematisation of road networks [1] [6]. Studies of the effectiveness of schematics, their criteria and how they influence users have also been performed [11] [17].…”
