A Space-Division Multiplexing Method for Fading Noise Suppression in the Φ-OTDR System

Abstract: Phase-sensitive time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) can be used for fully distributed long-distance vibration monitoring. There is a fading phenolmenon in the Φ-OTDR, which will cause the signal intensity somewhere to be too low to extract the phase of the signal without distortion. In this paper, the Φ-OTDR based on space-division multiplexing (SDM) is proposed to suppress fading and we used multi-core optical fiber (MCF) to realize SDM. While inheriting the previous optimization strategy, we proposed a strate… Show more

“…In 2021, Zhang et al proposed a method to suppress coherent fading by Φ-OTDR based on space division multiplexing (SDM), and the experimental results proved that the method could greatly reduce the distortion rate of the signal to maintain it below 2%. This was useful in significantly improving the monitoring performance of commercial systems [45].…”

“…However, a complete analysis of the polarization properties of the coherently superposed RBL has not been reported, to the best of our knowledge. As a direct result, the polarization effects are not even considered in the reported physical models of φ-OTDR [ 22 , 23 ]. In contrast to the perfectly coherent CW probe, the φ-OTDR pulsed light has a finite linewidth.…”

“…Sterenn Guerrier et al presented a simple and incomplete calculation of the round-trip Jones matrix in φ-OTDR [ 20 , 21 ]. Since the detailed result is not presented, the polarization effects are not considered in the reported physical models of φ-OTDR [ 22 , 23 ]. To understand the polarization properties of the coherent RB when the incident light is perfectly coherent, we recently derived the Jones matrix and the Mueller matrix that govern the polarization properties of the coherent RB [ 24 ].…”
