A spreadsheet-based decision support system for examination timetabling

Abstract: Examination timetabling is an inevitable problem of educational institutions. Each institution has its own particular limitations; however, the main structure is the same: assigning exams to time slots and classrooms. Several institutions solve the problem manually, but it becomes more difficult every year with increasing numbers of students and limited resources. There are many studies in the literature addressing the examination timetabling problem (ETP) and providing high quality solutions within reasonable… Show more

“…Third, they asked whether the model can handle personal requests or not. Although any request can be employed in the model using constraints, we decided not to incorporate the requests in the model since the authors’ personal experiences ( Güler et al, 2013 );( Güler and Geçici, 2020 ) ;( Geçici and Güler, 2020 )) show that once personal requests are incorporated it becomes very hard to manage the process in terms of social affairs. “…In Guler and Gecici's (2020) studies for Yildiz Technical University Industrial Engineering Department exam program, a Mixed Integer Programming model was proposed. The developed program has been turned into a DSS that does not require any technical knowledge and can be easily used by an average spreadsheet user [25].…”

“…Therefore, addressing these conflicts will further enhance the efficiency of the application and any other applications developed by other researchers. On the other hand, Güler and GeÇici (2020) prioritized implementing an interactive computer-based scheduling method called Decision Support System, which provides more flexibility and control to the output. They also stated that developing a web-based DSS is a good idea to be used on other computers without requiring installation processes.…”
