A stable liquid–liquid extraction system for clavulanic acid using polymer-based aqueous two-phase systems

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe partitioning of Clavulanic Acid (CA) in a novel inexpensive and stable aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) composed by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) has been studied. The aqueous two-phase systems are formed by mixing both polymers with a salt (NaCl or Na 2 SO 4 ) and an aqueous solution of CA. The stability of CA on the presence of both polymers was investigated and it was observed that these polymers do not degrade the biomolecule. The effect of PEG-molecular size,… Show more

“…Since ATPS is a technique of quick and easy application several studies to purify and separate contaminants of the target molecules has been performed. Among the molecules studied employing ATPS formed by two polymers or a polymer and a salt can be cited: oxidase ascorbate, proteases, bromelain, laccases, betalain, lutein, polyketides, collagenase, and antibiotics …”

“…Specifically, sodium sulfate saturated solution was employed to precipitate carbohydrate and nitrogen compounds in clostridium tyrobutyricum fermentation broth, followed by adding polyethylene glycol (PEG)/sodium sulfate ATPS for butyric acid extraction from the broth. The ATPS method is characterized by low energy consumption and possibility of reusing the extraction agents [6][7][8][9][10][11]. We investigated the effects of different ATPSs on the extraction yield of butyric acid, and systematically studied the extraction conditions by a single factor and response surface analysis (RSA), so as to obtain a new process for the efficient extraction of butyric acid from a fermentation broth.…”
