A State-of-the-Art Review on the Wear of the Occlusal Surfaces of Natural Teeth and Prosthetic Crowns

Abstract: This review focuses on the wear mechanisms of natural and restorative dental materials, presenting a comprehensive description and analysis of the works published in the last two decades on the wear at the interface of occlusal surfaces. Different groups of tribological pairs were considered: tooth-tooth, tooth-restorative material (tooth-ceramic, tooth-resin-based-materials, and tooth-metal), and restorative-restorative materials. The lack of standardization of the wear tests impairs the direct comparison of … Show more

“…The slight increase in surface roughness of IPS e.max CAD and Vita Enamic after immersion in Coca-Cola and coffee could be also attributed to the effect of acid in degrading the ceramic matrix and exposing rough surfaces [41] . This was in agreement with (Branco et al; Hussein et al) [42,33] who stated that the increase in surface roughness of ceramics was due to the dissolution of the ceramic material by the effect of acids.…”

“…Clinical wear is a complex process involving two-and-three-body wear and is influenced by materials' composition, antagonist properties, diet, and applied force [ 15 ]. Dental materials exhibit different wear mechanisms while underwear conditions in vitro [ 30 , 31 ]. None of these standing mechanisms can completely simulate the clinical wear process [ 30 ].…”

“…Dental materials exhibit different wear mechanisms while underwear conditions in vitro [ 30 , 31 ]. None of these standing mechanisms can completely simulate the clinical wear process [ 30 ]. Consequently, a straight correlation between the clinical and in vitro wear tests remains a challenge [ 32 ].…”

“…To date, a large number of existing studies have reported on the wear behaviors of these aesthetic restorative materials; however, the majority of these studies are unable to be compared directly because of different product materials, specimen morphologies, and testing and evaluation methods [ 30 , 31 ]. In particular, evidence on the wear behavior of opposite restorative materials is still a matter of debate.…”
