A Striking New Epiphytic Hedychium (Zingiberaceae) From Myanmar With a Discussion on Some Anomalous Related Genera

Abstract: Zingiberaceae) is described and illustrated. Several characters make this species one of the most unusual in the genus; however, molecular phylogenetic data place it unequivocally in Hedychium. The similarities and relationships of this species to the anomalous taxa Nanochilus, Rhynchanthus, Stadiochilus, and Hedychium (Brachychilum) horsfieldii are discussed.

“…6). In a few genera the lateral staminodes and/or the labellum are reduced or absent (Rhynchanthus, Pommereschea, Nanochilus, Stadiochilus, Laosanthus, Hedychium horsfieldii, and H. bordelonianum;Smith, 1980;Newman, 1990;Larsen and Jenjittikul, 2001;Williams, Kress, and Thet Tun, 2002). Hence, the presence of well-developed lateral staminodes is a feature not shared by all members of the Zingiberoideae as recognized here.…”

“…), to aquatics (e.g. Alpinia aquatica ), to vine-like and some that can achieve heights over ten meters (Williams et al , 2003; Kress and Specht, 2005). The notable seed anatomical and morphological variety may account for the extraordinary ecological success and high species diversity of Zingiberaceae relative to the other seven families in the order.…”
