A study of chronic pneumonia in a guineapig colony with enzootic Bordetella bronchiseptica infection

Abstract: Three types of lesion were present in the lungs of guinea pigs with chronic pneumonia - pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, perivascular lymphoid hyperplasia and foreign body granulomas. Bordetella bronchiseptica was present in the nasopharynx, trachea and lungs of a high proportion of animals from 4 weeks old, and antibodies to this organism were also found. Animals removed at 4 days old and reared in isolation from the main colony and free from B. bronchiseptica developed similar lung lesions, so that B. bronch… Show more

“…Our findings are in general agreement with Baskerville et al where Bordetella bronchiseptica was isolated from a high proportion of clinically normal guineapigs over 39 days of age. This situation is similar to that reported in the rabbit [Baskerville et al 1982, Percy & Barthold 1993. In contrast, we did find the mild acute tracheal and nasal lesions with a suggestive correlation to Bordetella infection.…”

“…Foreign material consistent with feed particles was detected in one animal, an incidental finding which has previously been described in guineapigs, and not attributed to Bordetella bronchiseptica (Baskerville et al 1982). Lungs Griffith, Brasky & Lang from the remaining 35 animals without gross lesions were histologically normal.…”

“…Widespread sloughing of the laryngeal mucosa was seen in one animal, but tracheal lesions were consistently absent, despite the presence of the organism. This probably represents mucosal colonization without pathogenic effects, a situation also seen in the Bordetella-infected guinea pig and rabbit (Baskerville, Baskerville & Wood, 1982;Ashworth et aZ., 1982).…”
