A Study of Factors Influencing on Passive and Active Acceptance of Home Energy Management Services with Internet of Things

Abstract: Since awareness of the influence of home energy management services (HEMS) with Internet of things (IoT) has grown, the study on the acceptance of IoT services has been expanded. Previous studies, however, have not paid attention to the acceptance itself, focusing only on factors affecting the acceptance. This study attempts to draw meaningful implications by exploring the relationships between the acceptance and the factors affecting it with distinctions between passive acceptance and active acceptance. This … Show more

“…Park and Jeong's paper (in this Special Issue) [34] contributes to the research on social inequalities affecting energy consumption by analysing a special dimension. Their theoretical innovation is that, compared to previous research concerning the investigation of what factors influence the use of the Internet of things (IoT) in the services of home energy management (HEM) systems, they separate the concepts of passive and active acceptance.…”

“…In summary, we can quote the results of the study by Kim and Park [34], who provide an overview and statistical analysis of the studies on household energy use published between 2011 and 2020, in this Special Issue. In the given time interval, microgrid systems, smart homes, energy digitization, solar energy production systems, household batteries, energy measurement and forecasting, energy breakdown, and renewable energy supplies are the intensively researched topics.…”

“…In addition to perceived knowledge and economic expectations, RPV adoption is also influenced by behavioral and socio-psychological factors. Such factors have been used to study various sustainability-related behaviors (e.g., preferences for hybrid vehicles [24,25], participation in renewable energy communities [26], and acceptance of home energy management services [27]), providing steps to an integrated framework for studying RPV adoption [13,28]. This section reviews two theories and previous research that would serve as a framework for identifying and understanding the influence of these factors on RPV adoption.…”

“…It is a very broad approach to the implementation of the assumptions of the concept of the IoT and in such a broad context the Internet of Things is defined as "a concept and a paradigm that considers pervasive presence in the environment of a variety of things/objects that through wireless and wired connections and unique addressing schemes are able to interact with each other and cooperate with other things/objects to create new applications/services and reach common goals" [12] (p. 6122). From that perspective the IoT allows virtually unlimited scope of research and implementation related to the establishment of a smart environment, also in the context of, for example, effective management of energy in households [13].…”
