A study of otolaryngology resident quality of life and sleepiness

Abstract: ObjectivesThis study aimed to determine otolaryngology residents' quality of life and sleepiness.MethodsAn electronic survey was distributed to otolaryngology residents in the United States in October 2014 and May 2015. “…Burnout is a psychological syndrome comprised of feelings of exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced professional efficacy that are detrimental to their professional performance (Maslach and Jackson, 1981). Symptoms of burnout often begin in medical school (Frajerman et al, 2019), continue in residency (Legassie et al, 2008;Garcia-Rodriguez et al, 2017) and are well established in practicing physicians (Shanafelt et al, 2012;West et al, 2018). Burnout affects upwards of 45% of this population.…”

“…32 In the USA, otolaryngology residents work around 71 hours per week on average. 33 In the UK, the European Working Time Directive together with the introduction of a new junior doctor's contract in 2016 limits average working hours to 48 per week, with a maximum of 72 hours in a 7-day period. 34 Further research is needed to ascertain whether the quality of life of otolaryngologists in the UK is comparable to that in the USA.…”

“…The greatest limitation on fellows teaching was lack of time. Insufficient time is highlighted as a barrier in literature in both undergraduate and graduate otolaryngology education . One method to alleviate time constraints is teaching in small increments of time during patient care such as the “one‐minute preceptor” model .…”

“…Insufficient time is highlighted as a barrier in literature in both undergraduate 8 and graduate otolaryngology education. 9 One method to alleviate time constraints is teaching in small increments of time during patient care such as the "oneminute preceptor" model. 10 In this teaching method, the preceptor rapidly assesses what the learner thinks is going on, probes for underlying reasoning, teaches a general principle on the topic, and provides a piece of feedback to the learner.…”
