The present study was designed to study the role and performance of input dealers in extension services and the relationship of farmers and dealers from a farmer perspective. For this study, a survey was taken in the Coimbatore district using a purposive random sampling technique with a well-structured interview schedule. The study found that most dealers had 40-50 farmers as customer per day at peak and offseason. Regarding technical assistance given to farmers, 90.00 per cent of the farmers asked for the brand. Delivery in prime season (1.181) followed by credit period (0.633), company officials behaviour (0.600) are the primary factor in the satisfaction of dealers with the company. Regarding the level of satisfaction of the farmers, Product choice (93.33%), Credit facility and availability of the product (90.00%) were the primary satisfaction criteria of the farmers with input dealers. It was concluded from the study that agro chemical company have field assistant at the block and village level to assess the farmers’ problem. In addition, the company having a strong research unit to develop is a need-based product for farmers. They had proper follow up activities in the farmer’s field. Therefore, Agri-input dealers were the first focus of the farmers at the village level. The Agriculture department could use the Agri-input dealers to transfer technology at farmers level and its reach would be high.

Globally more than half of the pesticides are utilized in Asia. India stands 12th in pesticide use globally and 3rd in Asia after China and Turkey. In present study, the data of different types of pesticides, pesticide use pattern and detailed pesticide consumption of the India and world were collected, organized and summarized. Agriculture is the most important sector of the Indian economy providing employment and livelihood to nearly 70% of the total population. And pesticides are an integral part of modern agriculture. Insecticides, fungicides and herbicides are commonly used for pest control in agriculture. However, insecticides form the highest share in total pesticide use in India. India share only1% of the global pesticide use. India has utilized around 58160 tonnes of pesticide in 2018. Per hectare application rate of pesticide was 0.31 kg in 2017. Despite a low per hectare use of pesticides in India, their injudicious use has led to the presence of residues in both biotic and abiotic sections of the environment. The advance research and development in the field of bio-pesticides applications greatly reduce the environmental pollution caused by the chemical synthetic insecticides residues and promotes sustainable development of agriculture. In India numerous bio-pesticides presently being developed may be exceptional replacements to chemical pesticides. There are many eco-friendly plant based and microbial bio-pesticides available in the market. Bio-pesticides consumption is only 8% in India. For sustainable agricultural development and to protect environment from adverse effect of chemical pesticides, formulation and utilization of bio-pesticides should be prompted.

The modern agriculture is heavily dependent on agrochemicals like fertilizer, pesticides, micronutrients and plant growth regulators for food and livelihood security in the world. In India, the consumption pattern of pesticides includes insecticides (61.11%), herbicides (22.22%) and fungicides (11.11%). Cotton and vegetables are high pesticides consuming agro-products followed by staple food grains (Rice, Wheat, Corn, Millets). The inappropriate toxic chemicals exposure is not only poisoning & killing of farm families but also dispersing pesticide residues in the environment causing mass killings of nonhuman biotas, such as bees, birds, amphibians, fish, and small mammals. The organophosphate (diazinon, malathion, coumaphos) pesticides affect the nervous system of human beings. Many Pesticides are not easily digestible, they persist in soil, leach to groundwater and surface water and contaminate the wide environment. DDT and Methyl parathion, BHC like toxic residues are also found in humans and other mammals due to bio-accumulated in food chain causing serious health hazards. This book chapter deals with Role of pesticide application in environmental degradation and its remediation strategies.
