As one of the vital ways to improve the converter heat balance and increase the scrap ratio, scrap pre-heating technology has attracted much attention from researchers. The aim of this paper is to reveal the effect of the oxy-fuel lance parameters on the temperature field, flow field, and scrap pre-heating temperature in the ladle by means of numerical simulations. For this, a three-dimensional mathematical model containing the turbulence model, the porous medium heat balance model, and other models has been developed. The research results show that the rational and correct choice of gas flow rate, lance position, and nozzle angle has an important influence on the temperature field and the average scrap temperature. When the gas flow rate increases, the internal annular combustion zone of the scrap gradually expands, the cold zone at the bottom of the scrap continues to decrease, and the average scrap temperature keeps increasing. When the gas flow rate is 5000 m3/h, and the average scrap temperature reaches 1197 K, the pre-heating time is 9.98 min. Lowering the oxy-fuel lance position helps to reduce the cold zone at the bottom of the scrap and increases the average temperature in the cold zone. Reasonable selection of the nozzle angle is conducive to improving the uniformity of the flow field. When the angle of the nozzle is 15°, the gas circulation zone is the largest, and the time to reach an average scrap temperature of 1197 K is the shortest.

To improve the utilization of steel scrap in the steel production process, the authors analyze the feasibility of adding scrap steel into the multifunctional ladle before hot metal tapping. Firstly, the authors provide an overview of the process. Secondly, theoretically study the melting process of scrap steel in the ladle along with the scrap steel melting mechanism is done. Finally, the effects of the addition of different types of scrap steel pretreated at various temperatures are examined using numerical calculation and simulation. The preheating temperature and specific surface area of the scrap steel had important effects on scrap steel melting. For the scrap steel with a specific surface area of 1.6 m 2 t À1 , the melting rate decreased by 4 min t À1 as the preheating temperature was increased from 300 C to 800 C. For a preheating temperature of 800 C, the melting rate increased by 4.5 min t À1 as the specific surface area increased from 3.3 to 26.1 m 2 t À1 . Another 2.2%-6% of scrap steel can be added under certain conditions. This approach provides an effective solution to the problem of melting large amounts of scrap steel in steel works, further increases the utilization of scrap steel during steel production, and reduces the cost of steel production.

Numerical Investigation on Heat Transfer Efficiency from Gas to Scrap in Feeding System of 100 t Consteel Electric Arc Furnace

The Consteel electric arc furnace (EAF) has gained rapid development in the field of EAF steelmaking due to its advantageous features including short tap‐to‐tap time, low production energy consumption, and waste heat recovery. However, the low heat transfer efficiency from gas to scrap has remained a persistent technical challenge in Consteel EAF. This research establishes a scrap preheating model for the Consteel EAF to comprehensively investigate the heat transfer efficiency from gas to scrap. The calculation results demonstrate that the heat transfer efficiency from gas to scrap can be effectively enhanced by increasing the initial gas velocity and scrap porosity. Specifically, raising the initial gas velocity from 0.9 to 1.5 m s−1 improves convective and radiative heat exchange, leading to increased heat transfer efficiency from gas to scrap at the same positions within the scrap layer. Moreover, increasing the scrap porosity from 0.92 to 0.98 significantly enhances the heat transfer efficiency through augmented radiation heat exchange. Notably, the improvement in heat transfer efficiency resulting from increased porosity is considerably greater than that achieved through increased gas velocity. The findings of this study hold significant practical implications for the actual field production operations in the horizontal continuous feeding system of EAF.
