A Study of the Metabolic Requirements for the Contractile Action of Angiotensin Upon Guinea‐pig Ileum

Abstract: 1Acetylcholine and angiotensin elicit a contraction of guinea-pig ileum. The metabolic requirements for these actions have been investigated. 2 The angiotensin-induced response was far more dependent upon the presence of glucose than was the response to acetylcholine. 3 Anoxia and oxidative enzyme inhibition preferentially reduced the angiotensin-induced response.4 The significance of these results is discussed. It is concluded that the response to angiotensin is dependent upon an ATP source distinct from that… Show more

“…This may also indicate that effects are not cholinergically mediated (Milenov & Golenhofen, 1987). In other tissues, such as guinea-pig ileum, direct effects on muscle strips as well as cholinergically mediated ones have been discussed (Godfraind & Polster, 1966;Crocker & Wilson, 1974).…”

“…In vivo studies have demonstrated a delay in gastric emptying in the rat (Scarpignato, Manfredi, Starcich & Bertaccini, 1983) while in man a closure of the lower oesophageal sphincter has been found (Haulica et al, 1980). In vitro studies on small intestine and colon of various species, such as the guineapig, rat and man, have demonstrated contractions of isolated smooth muscle prepartions after application of angiotensin I1 with thresholds between and mol 1-' (Blair-West & McKenzie, 1966;Godfraind & Polster, 1966;Fishlock & Gunn, 1970;Chong & Downing, 1973;Bertaccini, Impicciatore, Molina & Zappia, 1974;Crocker & Wilson, 1974;Ercan & Turker, 1977;Zetler, 1979).…”
