A Study of Ziegler–Natta Propylene Polymerization Catalysts by Spectroscopic Methods

Abstract: Ziegler–Natta polymerization catalysts were characterized by a complex of surface- and bulk-sensitive methods (DRIFTS, XPS, ESR, and XAS = XANES + EXAFS). A diffuse-reflectance Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy (DRIFTS) study showed the presence of strong Lewis acid sites in different concentrations and absence of strong basic sites in the polymerization catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron-spin resonance (ESR), and (X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis revealed the pres… Show more

“…Steady-state DRIFTS spectra were acquired for H-BEA and 2 wt % Pd/BEA samples using a 1 h exposure of C 3 H 6 and O 2 at 80 °C (Figure ). The set of larger peaks at 2950, 2910, and 2850 cm –1 is associated with C–H stretches of the CH 2 group of adsorbed HC species, which are likely present as long-chain alkanes formed during C 3 H 6 coupling . The smaller peaks between 1100 and 1300 cm –1 are associated with bending of the CH 2 and CH 3 groups of these HCs (Figure b).…”

“…The set of larger peaks at 2950, 2910, and 2850 cm −1 is associated with C−H stretches of the CH 2 group of adsorbed HC species, which are likely present as long-chain alkanes formed during C 3 H 6 coupling. 40 The smaller peaks between 1100 and 1300 cm −1 are associated with bending of the CH 2 and CH 3 groups of these HCs (Figure 5b). Additionally, these peaks are evident in both Pd/BEA and H-BEA spectra, as well as in the presence of NO in the feed.…”

“…Recent years have seen more experimental studies that focus on structure–function relationships, for both traditional MgCl 2 -based ZNCs and new MgCl 2 -derived support materials. Still, many studies try to investigate the produced polymer in intricate ways to learn more about these elusive catalysts via an indirect approach . It is our belief that the final answers about the working mechanisms of ZNCs will primarily be found when studying the catalysts themselves …”

“…DRIFT spectroscopy was employed to trace the structural evolution during the synthesis procedure of the POSSmodified catalyst. 28 The DRIFT spectra of the intermediates and POSS-modified catalyst mentioned above are displayed in Figure 2a each reaction step, the ν(OH) region (4000−3200 cm −1 ) and ν(CH) region (3200−2800 cm −1 ) are highlighted in Figure 2b,c, respectively. For bare silica, the single sharp peak at 3746 cm −1 is characteristic of isolated silanol groups, 27 which is negligible after treating with TEA.…”
