A Study on Electroless Plating of Cobalt Alloy Films for Perpendicular Recording

Abstract: An electroless plating bath for the preparation of perpendicular recording media was developed. It was found that the hcp structure of Co-P is oriented normal to the film plane with the Mn codeposition into the films. First, an ammoniacal malonate-malate bath, containing MnSO4, was selected. Nickel was codeposited into the films in order to decrease the saturation magnetization, Ms, since low Ms is necessary to decrease the demagnetizing field. Second, effects were investigated for three factors (i.e., MnSO4 c… Show more

“…Hyashi 220 summarised the electroless quaternary alloy deposits to 1991. Osaka et al 221,222 prepared electroless Co-Ni-Mn-P deposits, used for perpendicular recording media and also 223 Co-Ni-Re-P. Zhang and coworkers investigated systematically the preparation and properties of electroless Ni-Cu-Sn-P alloys. 224,225 Only one paper on electroless quintuple alloy deposits was found during this period, on Co-Ni-Mn-Re-P. 226 The aim was to improve the performance of perpendicular magnetic media.…”

[29][30][31][32] As nickel is very hard and its friction factor is small, it forms a highly wear resistant coating and is also cheaper and more conductive than other metals. 33 Copper sulfide-polyacrylonitrile (CuS-PAN) fibers have various advantages such as electrical conductivity, chemical resistance, friction resistance, antibiosis, and EMI shielding effectiveness (SE).…”
